Happy 2009

Have a great New Year's Eve, and a happy 2009 to everyone!

Merchandise shopping

Now that the Sticky & Sweet Tour is over, the only place to buy the official merchandise is at FanFire. But you have to be quick, as it's selling out fast!

Another reason to hate Beyonce

“I grew up upper-class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar. We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons. But I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.”

Just a quote from Beyonce's interview to Elle Magazine (december issue). Apparantly she's not interesting enough herself, so she needs to trash other people to make an interview work?

What a bitch!

2008 has been great

As the new year is approaching (it's already 2009 in some parts of the world), it's time for my traditional list of things to be thankful about in this past year. So here we go, the good things of 2008:

First and foremost, I've moved, so now I've been living in my new appartment for the past 4 months, and loving every second of it. I suppose this is has been the biggest change this year. I can't ever imagine going back to the tiny student room I used to live in.

I've seen Madonna 5 times this year! It started in May when I won tickets for the Hard Candy Promo Showcase at Olympia Music Hall in Paris. I could have never imagined seeing Madonna in a venue that is smaller than the Golden Circle at her usual stadium and arena tours. Then, in the summer, it was time to get Sticky & Sweet at the Amsterdam ArenA, Dusseldorf's LTU Arena, and twice at Paris' Stade De France. Also, I met some pretty fabulous people during the tour, most especially Jacolijn and Arjen, who became friends.

A lot of other great concerts were also pat of 2008! I've been front row at KylieX2008 at Ahoy Rotterdam, and Mika's Dodgy Holidays Tour at Westerpark Amsterdam. Also I went to see Kane and Alfabeat at the Oosterpoort Groningen.

Everything's well at work, healthwise, friends-wise and family wise, so what do I have to complain?

2008 has been great, and 2009 is gonna be fine (I've been dying to use this little rhyme)!

New style

I went to get my hair cut today, and I'm really happy wth the results! A very good way to end the new year. The hairdresser suggested a new style and showed me some pictures of what it would look like, so I said okay, and here we are! I'm very happy with it!

I'll post some pictures of it tomorrow!

Right now I've got to run, since Leendert will be in Groningen in less than two hours! Have a great day!

Zac 2008

We can't say goodbye to the old year without Zac Efron, now can we?

Biggest grossing tour

Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet Tour" was the biggest-grossing music tour of 2008 in North America, raking in $105.3 million, concert tracking magazine Pollstar said on Monday.

The Material Girl, whose 58-show world tour finished in Brazil last week, was closely followed by another solo diva - Canadian-born Celine Dion, who made $94 million in North America from her first tour since ending an almost five-year residency in Las Vegas a year ago.

Rock veterans The Eagles were third on Pollstar's list, grossing $73.4 million for their tour to support possibly their last studio album "Long Road out of Eden".

Pollstar's Top 10 list did not include global tour earnings for the year.

Wanna Be On Top?!

Hurrah! America's Next Top Model, cycle 10, has just started tonight on Dutch television!

Together again (for now)

Madonna and Guy Ritchie have been spotted together at London's Kabbalah Center in London. As you know, the two are at war over a divorce settlement, so ths is something quite unique.

Your disco needs him

Another yum yum picture of Jason Beitel, this time while performing Your Disco Needs You on the KylieX2008 Tour!

Lazy days

Having a week long vacation is such a treat! I actually woke up this morning thinking it was time to go to the office, so imagine how happy I was discovering I could just tur around and sleep for a couple more hours! Now that I'm up, I had breakfast with some nice eggs, and now I'm thinking of what to do today. Uhm... absolutely nothing! I'm going to the supermarket to get some nice things, and then spend the rest of the day watching DVD's. Lovely!

Tomorrow Leendert is coming over, so he, Ziena, Harm Jan and I are going out for drinks. He will stay until Thursday morning, as of course he will also be present onmy New Year's Eve party. Speaking of New Year's Eve, it promises to be a great party. I'm having a full house, just the way I like it!

What are your plans for New Year's eve?

London town

Leendert and I have decided to go to London for a few days, end of March 2009! I can't wait! It's been such a long time since I've last been there! As you may know, London is my favourite place in the whole world, so I can't wait to get back there!

Sticky & Sweet DVD rumours

Rumour has it Madonna's Sticky & Sweet World Tour 2008 will be released on DVD in the first quarter of 2009. The only question is, which show will it be? The shows have been filmed in London, New York City, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago and Sao Paulo. It will probably be one of the 4 Buenos Aires shows at the River Plate Stadium, but who knows?

Jamie King is in the house

Britney Spears has dumped her usual directors in favour of the lovely Jamie King, to direct her upcoming The Circus Starring Britney Spears Tour! Jamie King has been the director of Madonna's Drowned World, Re-Invention, Confessions and Sticky & Sweet Tours, and, if I may say so, did a bang-up job with that! He also directed Britney's own Oops Tour back in 2000, and several other artists' shows.

Although I do think Britney will, again, resort to lipsynching the entire 'concert', perhaps bringing in Jamie King will at least bring the show some style.

Unfortunately, Britney thinks Europe's only city worthy enough for her to play, is London (where she wil play the O2 Arena 8 times), so I won't be able to see this show. I have no problem at all going to other countries for the likes of Madonna, Kylie Minogue, or Take That, but for Britney? No thanks.

One of the boys

I want to buy myself Katy Perry's album One Of The Boys. I love both I Kissed A Girl, UR So Gay and Hot And Cold, so that's justification enough to buy the entire album. I think Katy's going to be a big one, and we haven't heard the last of her by far!

How sad

Look what they're resulting to now... It seems like the Conservatives are still not able to accept the fact they've lost the US Presidential election, so this is what they've come up with this time...

I'm an American … and you?

If you've ever wished you could be somewhere you know you'll never be, Friday was it for me. I was watching Fox News Friday afternoon, and it ran a story about Barack Obama's Christmas vacation in Hawaii.

He dropped in for a workout at a Marine base (or so they report), and afterward he pulled a photo op by checking in on our troops at dinner time at the chow hall.

Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't have bothered me. Nothing more than the typical visit from an typical politician out pressing the flesh, asking these kid's where they were from and trying to make brownie points with our boys in uniform. But Obama's not your typical politician now, is he?

No he's not – there are thunder clouds of controversy that overshadow this man who some call the "Messiah." Sooner or later, it will rain on his parade!

So I'm watching this news report and thinking, "I wish I were a Marine stationed there!" Had the man asked me where I was from, I would have replied, "I'm from America, Sir. What about yourself?" in a disrespectful and snide sort of way.

Of course I wouldn't have been a Marine long. I would have been "Joe the Plumbered" and run out of the service – but it would have been worth that one shot!

I think our young warriors have earned the right to know the man who'll either order them into battle or humiliate and demoralize them by forcing unconditional surrender.

They've earned the right to know if he's one of us or not – an "American," that is!

Boring? No way

With the risk of sounding extremely boring: I've just had a fun day all by myself, without seeing anyone I know. Sure, I could have gone for drinks somewhere in town with some friends, but I actually wasn't feeling like it. So, I just stayed in with a nice glass of ice tea and my new movies (I wrote about them earlier today).

Also, I had my pet rabbit running around in my living room, which is great to watch, but also needs a lot of supervision, at least, if I don't want my power lines and just about everything else to get bitten through. Still, it's really cool having her out of her cage, cause she's running around like mad and jumping up and down and stuff. Basically, all the things a rabbit usually does in the wild (well except for making truckloads of new rabbits).

So, after a relaxed day, I'm off to bed with a book. Could I be any more boring? Hehe, I don't care, it's been a good day!

Shark attacks

Pictured above is a Great White shark attacking kajakers in the ocean near Sydney, Australia, yesterday. Paddlers Justin Stanger and Steve Kulscar were saved from the water.

Australia has had a particular bad day when it comes to sharks, as, in the meantime, on the other side of the continent, a man was killed by a Great White. 51 year old Mr. Guest was killed off the shore of Perth.

I'm so glad to not live anywere near Australia...

Most wanted

4 Minutes, by Madonna and Justin Timberlake, is MySpace' most listened to song of 2008! Congratulations to Madonna for yet another milestone!

Unfortunately the hairdresser was closed today, so I still haven't got my hair got. To make me feel better I went to the record store, where there were loads of DVDs on sale. Bargains galore! I bought myself The Firm, The Shawshank Redemption and The Sum Of All Fears! I'm having a movie evening tonight!

A great Christmas

It's been a great Christmas for me these past few days. On Thursday I went to my family in Leeuwarden, where my sister, along with her husband and their children were as well. It was a nice day, with loads of good food! In the evening my mother and I watched The Sound Of Music for the 7292347th time, but it's always a nice feelgood movie one cannot watch too many times. Afterwards, we watched the KylieX2008 Tour DVD, which concluded a great day.

On Friday my brother, his girlriend and their son came over, so again we had a great day. At 8-ish I went back to Groningen, cause I was meeting up with my friend Martijn for drinks at his place in the evening, which was fun as well.

Now that Christmas is over, it's time for me to get a new haircut, so I'm off to the barber's!

Kylie's Christmas message

The lovely Kylie Minogue has send her fans the following Christmas message:

What a year!! I have had an absolutely wonderful 2008 and want to thank you for helping make it so. I have traveled to so many countries for the first time and revisited some amazing places. It's been a pleasure to be on the road and sharing time with my touring 'family' on 'X2008' and of course sharing these incredible experiences with you!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and all good things for 2009.

Love to you all, Kylie x

The last soundcheck

Before the last Sticky & Sweet show at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo, the fans were -again- let in while Madonna was still soundchecking. This has happened a lot during this tour, and Madonna has been extremely comfortable with the situation. She used to get angry when the audience was let in too early (it happened a couple of times on the Re-Invention Tour 2004 and the Confessions Tour 2006). Not this time, she has been quite talkative during the tour!

Anyway, check out the soundcheck pictures:

Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain is on Dutch television tonight (channel Nederland 3). I've got it on DVD, but I'm gonna watch it anyway, as I think it's a fantastic movie. I recommend it highly, so if you happen to live inthe Netherlands:go check it out!

A Zac Efron holiday

No holiday can go by without Zac Efron!

Holiday time

As of a couple of minutes ago, I now have vacation until January 5! Lovely, the thought alone of doing nothing for a week and a half makes me extremely happy Tomorrow I'm going to Leeuwarden for Christmas. New year's eve will be celebrated with friends at my place, and for the rest, I don't have any plans!

End of tour press statement

Monday, December 22, 2008 - For Immediate Release - Los Angeles:

With the completion of Madonna's final show in Sao Paulo Brazil last evening - one of eleven record-breaking performances in South America - the 'Material Girl's' 'Sticky & Sweet' Tour reigns supreme by becoming the Number One Largest Grossing Tour in history by a solo artist, it was confirmed today by Live Nation, the tour's international producer. Her 58 shows in Europe, the US, Canada, Mexico and South America played for a staggering 2,350,282 million fans and sold over (USD)280,000,000 in tickets.

"Madonna has yet again demonstrated her true global appeal as a live performer whether in stadiums or arenas. Not only will this tour be the top selling tour of all time for a solo artist and a female artist (eclipsing her own record), but it will position her as one of the top selling touring artists of all time" said Arthur Fogel, Live Nation's Chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring.

Along with record breaking ticket sales in South America with a total 650,000 tickets sold, the 'Sticky & Sweet' Tour sold 72,000 tickets at Zurich's Military Airfield Dubendorf - the largest audience ever assembled for a show in Switzerland. In London, where she performed in front of 74,000 fans with over 12 million dollars in ticket sales, Madonna surpassed all previous records at both the old and new Wembley Stadiums. In New York City, Madonna's four sell-outs at Madison Square Garden shows added up to a record breaking 23 sold out performances since 2001 at that venue - a record for most appearances for a single artist in this decade.

Madonna's multi Grammy-nominated CD "Hard Candy" debuted at number one early this year in over 37 countries.

Good news for us Dutchies: 90210 will start on Net5 in January!

Christmas parade

Yesterday evening, my co-worker Sandra and I went to the SBS 6 Christmas Parade, downtown in Groningen. SBS 6 is a popular television station here in Holland, and this was the second year they organised a parade. The parade hadn't been in my hometown Groningen before, so it was a big deal coming to town.

Tens of thousands of people showed up to see the parade, and so we had to wait for quite some time in order to secure a good viewing spot. We weren't dissapointed, as the parade was good fun! Think Disneyland parades, and you get the idea. Also, on the last float, there were Dutch celebrities, including the winners of the just completed PopStars season, including hottie Deon.

After the parade, wewent for a drink at Groote Griet, where we were joined by our co-worker Gerben and his girlfriend. A great way to start the week!

The show is over, say goodbye

After 58 fantastic shows, the Sticky & Sweet World Tour is now over... Last night was the last show at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil (pictured above).

I've been to 4 Sticky & Sweet shows, and without a doubt, this has been Madonna's best tour ever!I can't wait for the DVD!

Kylie comes home

As Kylie and her entourage flew into Tullamarine yesterday afternoon, 14 trucks rolled in to the docking bays at the Rod Laver Arena laden with sets, sound desks, lights and pyrotechnics. This morning, a further three trucks were due to arrive with arguably the show’s most important cargo: the costumes, designed for this tour by John Paul Gaultier.

While audiences in Asia and the Middle East have seen a scaled-down version of the show that debuted in Paris in May, Melbourne will see the Kylie show in all its flamboyant glory over three shows, starting tonight. Among the highlights is “Nora”, the giant skull from which Minogue emerges during the show.

The numbers for this production are staggering. Much of the set made its way to Australia in six 16-metre shipping containers, but a further 22 tonnes of equipment was air-freighted. On top of that, local lighting and sound companies have been brought in to replicate the full European production.

Also shipped from London is the stage itself, which was built on a slope and contains hydraulic lifts in order to accommodate another spectacular element — the entire floor is covered in video screens. The effect is that the stage almost appears to be moving under Minogue’s feet.

As soon as Minogue’s final Sydney show wrapped late on Wednesday night, an army of workers swung into action, packing the 17 semi-trailers worth of equipment. By 3am yesterday, the trucks were on the Hume. As soon as they arrived in Melbourne, the load-in commenced.

Minogue’s production manager Kevin Hopgood was at the arena yesterday to greet the trucks and begin the venue’s transformation. Staff worked through to 11pm and will be back on the job from 7am. The aim was to have the staging ready for soundcheck by 4pm this afternoon.

Minogue’s custom-made one-off outfits pose special challenges for the crew. Minogue has to be sewn into and cut out of several of the costumes each night. Velcro also plays an important part. “We have to take great care of the outfits,” Mr Hopgood said. “If any of them got damaged, we’d be in deep trouble and have to start from scratch.”

Before the tour began, production staff mapped out the time it takes for Minogue to depart the stage and return in a new outfit for the eight costume changes. Every second is accounted for. “Everything runs to timecode,” Mr Hopgood says.

There are 92 staff on this tour. Following each of the three Rod Laver Arena shows this week, Minogue will hold post-show parties to mingle with family and friends. Does she have a different demeanour touring at home? “She does,” Mr Hopgood says. “For the crew and the band, it’s the highlight of the tour. It’s been a whole year of rehearsals and touring and it’s nice to get to the end and know what you’ve achieved. It’s actually a bit of a party for all of us.”

How's that working for ya?

I'm a big fan of Dr. Phil, who conveniently is always on Dutch television the moment I come home from work. I usually eat my dinner while watching the show, which is usually hilarious!

Madonna: Brazilian footballer

Click here to watch a very special clip of Madonna, performing on her Sticky& Sweet Tour in Rio De Janeiro. Earlier in the day Madonna received a Brazilian football team shirt from the governor of Rio, with her name, and the number 10 on it (pictured above). During the clip you can see Madonna wearing the shirt during the show finale Give It 2 Me. Also, in the end of the song, she steps of the runway to join the crowd for a singalong! Really, really cool!

Only two more show to go, and the fantastic Sticky & Sweet Tour will be over. Bring on the DVD!

Great fun

Yesterday the annual Christmas function was celebrated at the office. Each year this is a great night, but this time it was bigger and better than ever. The theme was Arabic, with belly dancers and magician. Really great fun!

Chace Crawford wallpaper

After all the Zac Efron wallpapers, it was about time for a Chase Crawford wallpaper!

Almost over

Kylie Minogue opened the last leg of her KylieX2008 Tour last night at Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia. Only a couple of shows left, and the tour, which started on May 6, is finally over.

I've seen the show front row at Ahoy Rotterdam, and I can't stop watching the DVD from the O2 Arena in London. To me, KylieX2008 is the best tour she's ever done!

I can't wait for the next!

I ordered the movie Threads on You may know that for some reason I collect movies about nuclear war, and this one was still missing. It's like the British version of The Day After, a movie I bought on DVD about a year ago.

I hope they'll deliver soon, I've heard some good stories about this one!

Max And The City

Harm Jan (Ziena's boyfriend) lent me the book In Alle Staten (literally: In All States, but also a Dutch saying, meaning something like 'Very agitated'), by Dutch news correspondent Max Westerman. Westerman has lived in the United States for many years, bringing the news for Dutch television station RTL4. I've always enjoyed his reports, and I think he gives a good impression of how a Dutchman would experience life in the United States.

The book is divided into different chapters, dealing with the differences between Americans and Europeans (and Dutchies in particular). It's really funny to see how much we differ from each other. Issues like consuming, money, sex, politics, healthcare... i's all a bit the same, but still very much different on the other side of the ocean. The nice thing is, although Westerman really points out the irony in all of it, he doesn't really judge, which is quite refreshing.

I don't know if there's an Englisg translation (probably not), but at least for the Dutch readers, I can highly recommend it!

Sorry losers

This article is extremely funny in its hypocricy. Note that this is the group that's filing lawsuits all over the United States to demand nativity scenes to be placed on government property. Too bad it cuts both ways, isn't it?

Washington's governor is permitting display of a Christmas-bashing atheist sign.

As Liberty Counsel's Mat Staver explains, the holiday display in the state Capitol includes a Christmas tree, nativity scene, menorah.

"Next to those three symbols is a rant by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, purportedly to celebrate the Winter Solstice -- but it doesn't do anything of the kind," says the Christian attorney. "It's a rant against the existence of God. It claims that there is no god, [that] there are no angels or devils or heaven or hell, and that reason should prevail."

Governor Chris Gregoire does not have to permit the atheist sign because it must meet the theme of the display, which it does not, says Staver. The sign, he says, is totally out of place because the other three items are symbols -- not attacks on other religions and their holidays.

"It's absolutely outrageous that this sign is there," Staver asserts, "and we ought to call on the governor to remove this travesty."

The governor said she has no choice but to allow the sign -- a stance Liberty Counsel labels as "erroneous."

Beware of the cold

Since two or three weeks, it feels like the Netherlands have turned into the North Pole, since it's cold enough to freeze your ass off. As return visitors of Totally Theo will know, when it comes to the weather, I hate the extremes. I don't like Summer, and I don't like Winter. I'm much more of a Fall or Spring person, when the weather's just nice enough to walk around with a summer coat on, not too cold, not too warm.

Right now, a little bit of warmth couldn't be more welcome. As I'm riding my bike to the office in the morning (when it's still dark, adding insult to injury), it's so cold I actually get sick. You know, sometimes when your hands get too cold and then when you enter a building all of a sudden you feel like fainting because of the sudden change of temperature? Well, I get that a lot, and it's not something I'm enjoying.

Another thing wth the cold is, I don't feel like doing anything in the evening. As soon as I return home after work, I can't get myself to leave the house again, which results in me staying in and cuddling up on the couch. Actually, with my new KylieX2008 DVD there's nothing wrong with staying in, but I do long for the day it's no bother at all to ride to the city center again. Good thing I've got my per rabbit, who's nice and warm to cuddle up to!

Even more hotties

And speaking f hotties, one of the reasons I love my new KylieX2008 Tour DVD so much, is because the gorgeous Jason Beitel is in it (pictured above during the ShowGirl Tour).
