Tyranny of the majority

As expected, the Conservative Right are trying to undo the Iowa Supreme Court's decision to legalise gay marriage. For instance, read what our friends from One"News"Now have to say about it. I would like to present a different view of the matter.

What's interesting in this case, is the fact that the church was also the primary institute to try and block interracial marriage halfway through the last century. They were also the ones that were against ending slavery, the ones against voting rights for women, and I could go on. I think it's safe to say that by now they would admit (well, maybe not even sincerely, but just because they don't really have a choice) in all these cases the will of the majority would have lead to the tyranny of the majority, which would be highly undesirable.

Truth is, there are just some things you can't leave up to the public, simply because the public isn't up to making certain decisions. These are not limited to cases where a minority is involved, but it is a touchy subject. Basically, the majority would always choose what they think is best for them, thereby almost automatically stepping down on the rights of the minority, hence my earlier examples of slavery and interracial marriage.

Now of course, many of the Conservative thinkers proclaim that being gay is a choice, and not something you're born into, and therefore cannot be compared to interracial marriage. They try to prove this by showing examples of so-called "ex-gays", which they say have been miraculously cured from their 'disease'. What they fail to tell though, is that most of these "ex-gays" fall back, or worse, become highly depressed because of the need to act like they're straight while they're obviously not. Also, some of them may not have been gay to begin with, which makes it even more of a farce.

In other words, they try all they can to prove people aren't born gay, while study after study has proven they actually are. Among the scientific community it is common knowledge that being gay is not behavioural, but rather biological. Therefore, there is no difference in protecting gay marriage from the tyranny of the majority to protecting interracial marriage.

Also, Christian Right seems to think the will of the majority is all that when the majority tends to vote their way, while the majority suddenly can't be trusted when they -gasp- vote the other way round. Just read how many articles One"News"Now and WND post about the supposedly horrible election of Barack Obama. Just saying.

By the way, I live in the Netherlands, where gay marriage has been legal for a couple of years now, and the last time I checked, the sky has not fallen.

Update: As I have been polite and courteous in trying to explain why I oppose the other side of the spectrum in this ongoing discussion, I expect the same from reader's comments. Therefore, comments containing profanity or hatred towards either side will be removed as soon as they come to my attention.
I do very much encourage you to respond, but only in a civilized manner.

marriage should be abolished anyway. it ALWAYS suppresses the weaker party. Besides, it's old-fashioned. Modern people just have multiple partners. And why not? Just like animals, be cool.

Too bad the disclaimer is necessary to let people keep behaving in a civilized manner. I kind of stresses your point about tyranny, doesn't it?

They should just legalize gay marriage, and be the 'free country' they're pretending to be...

A good post, Theo.

It's interesting to read the perspectives from outside the country. I have long felt that we in the States are unknowing recipients of countless eyerolls, snickers, and frustrated sighs.

Of course, the type of people who are so rabidly anti-gay are the same people who don't really care what non-Americans think. God is an American, you see.

Eventually, gay folks will get the same rights as everyone else. It's just a shame they have to wait for the angry clock-stoppers to get out of the way first.
