City of the day: Lisbon

2,8 Million people live in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Time to bring the city a virtual visit! Here are the three highlights:

1) The Castle of São Jorge is a Portuguese castle that occupies a commanding position overlooking the city of Lisbon, and the broad Tagus River (Rio Tejo) beyond. The strongly-fortified citadel, which, in its present configuration, dates from medieval times, is located atop the highest hill in the historic center of the city. The castle is one of the main historical and touristic sites of Lisbon.

2) Santa Maria Maior de Lisboa or Sé de Lisboa is the cathedral of Lisbon and the oldest church in the city. Since the beginning of the construction of the cathedral, in the year 1147, the building has been modified several times and survived many earthquakes. It is nowadays a mix of different architectural styles.

3) The Pombaline Lower Town area covers about 235,620 square metres of central Lisbon. It comprises the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.

This is part 32 out of a series of 50. Next city tomorrow: Hong Kong.

I was in Lisbon last summer (just before going over to Barcelona for your former Queen M ;-p)
Nice city, but veeeeeeeeeeery quiet from Monday to ... about Thursday ... for a capital, it was so weird to experience.
One of the safest places I've ever been to I must add!
