City of the day: Los Angeles

The city of angels, right there in sunny California: Los Angeles. The metropolitan area has almost 13 million people living there... wow! Here are my three highlights:

1) The Hollywood Sign is a famous landmark in the Hollywood Hills area of Mount Lee in Los Angeles, spelling out the name of the area in 14 m tall white letters. It was created as an advertisement in 1923, but garnered increasing recognition after the sign was left up. The sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism but has since undergone restoration, including a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to physically maintain, repair and secure the sign, to educate the world about its historical and cultural importance, and to raise the funds necessary to accomplish these projects.

2) The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, that serves as an entertainment museum. It is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but also fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry.

3) Staples Center is a multi-purpose sports arena in Downtown Los Angeles. Adjacent to the L.A. Live development, it is located next to the Los Angeles Convention Center complex. For pop concerts, it holds as many as 20.000 people. Michael Jackson's memorial service was held at Staples Center, as well as the annual Grammy Awards.

This is part 31 out of a series of 50. Next city tomorrow: Lisbon.
