City of the day: Manchester

It may not be the capital of the United Kingdom, but it is the second largest city, and definitely a place I want to visit sometime. 2,5 million people live here, and here are my three highlights:

1) The Manchester Evening News Arena (Short: MEN Arena) is the largest indoor arena in all of Europe. It's named this way because of the sponsor, newspaper Manchester Evening News. Aside from sport matches, the arena is used for concerts of international superstars. Nobody played more shows at the MEN Arena than Kylie Minogue, who filmed her KylieFever 02 DVD here. Other artists who regularly come to the MEN Arena are Madonna, Take That, P!nk and many, many more.

2) Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, neo-gothic municipal building functioning as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments. Completed by architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1877, the building features imposing murals by the artist Ford Madox Brown depicting important events in the history of the city.

3) Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The street, which runs along the side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with drinkers, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world.

This is part 16 out of a series of 50. Next city tomorrow: Oslo.
