Great news! The two biggest Dutch supermarket chains Albert Heijn and C1000 have both decided to stop selling meat from pigs that have been castrated without sedation.
It is widely thought castration is needed because pork meat would otherwise smell bad. However, recent research in Brazil has shown that castration of pigs is unnecessary because most pigs do not have the 'boar taint'. This is due to many breeds of pigs simply not having the heredity for the boar taint and the fact that pigs are normally slaughtered at a young market weight.
Thank you Albert Heijn and C1000! I hope many supermarket chains will follow! All this, by the way, is thanks to the great efforts of Wakker Dier.
