City of the day: Perth

Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. With a population of 1,6 million, Perth ranks fourth amongst the nation's cities. Here are the three highlights:

1) The Burswood Entertainment Complex is located on the Swan River some five minutes from the city of Perth, and is owned by Crown Limited. The complex includes a 24-hour casino, seven restaurants, eight bars, a nightclub, two international hotels (a luxury 5-star InterContinental and a 4-star Holiday Inn), a Convention Centre, Theatre and the Burswood Dome (a large concert arena).

2) HMAS Ovens is an Oberon class submarine formerly of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) which is now preserved as a museum ship. Ovens paid off on 1 December 1995. She is preserved as a museum ship at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle, Western Australia. She was the first submarine to be preserved in Australia as a museum ship.

3) City Beach has two major beaches (Floreat Beach and "City Beach") as well as a dog beach. Each of those beaches has its own competitive surf lifesaving club with all the associated facilities. Surfing is popular in the region and City Beach commonly has reasonable surf conditions for beginner to intermediate, although the break (particularly in summer) is often a shorebreak which can be hazardous at times. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are also summer activities that are frequently seen at City Beach. The sand is white/yellow and soft, making it an ideal surface for the beach volleyball courts and matkot. The main swimming and surfing area is protected between two groynes and it is overlooked by pleasant lawns.

This is part 42 out of a series of 50. Next city tomorrow: Athens.
