It's Grammy night

Tonight the Grammy Awards will be presented from Staples Center in Los Angeles! The most important American awards for the music industry, so it's a big night!

Among the performers tonight: Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, P!nk, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Green Day and Elton John.

A list of the winners will be posted tomorrow!

City of the day: Tokyo

We're in Tokyo, the captial of Japan, with a population of 12 million. Here are my three highlights:

1) Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 m. Along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku, it is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains"An active volcano[3] that last erupted in 1707–08, Mount Fuji is just west of Tokyo, and can be seen on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.

2) The Tokyo Stock Exchange, or TSE is the second largest stock exchange in the world by aggregate market capitalization of its listed companies, second only to the New York Stock Exchange. As of 31 December 2007, the Tokyo Stock Exchange had 2,414 listed companies with a combined market capitalization of $4.3 trillion.

3) Established in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum, or TNM, is the oldest and largest museum in Japan. The museum collects, houses, and preserves a comprehensive collection of art works and archaeological objects of Asia, focusing on Japan. The museum holds over 110,000 objects, which includes 87 Japanese National Treasure holdings and 610 Important Cultural Property holdings. The museum also conducts research and organizes educational events related to its collection.

Take one, take two

At the end of last year, Take That released two very special autobiographical books. The first, ‘Take One’, chronicles the band’s rise to fame and their massive success during the 90s. ‘Take Two’ covers Take That’s recent triumphant comeback.

It comes in an exclusive Take That slipcase, complete with four ribboned bookmarks and a certificate of ownership signed by Mark, Gary, Howard and Jason. Ke$ha is in Los Angeles, shooting the video for her second single Blah Blah Blah. She´s been Tweeting about it for a couple of days now, and of course it´s a big deal to her. TiK ToK was such a huge success, it will be difficult to top.

My guess is Ke$ha will be somewhat of a one hit wonder, with TiK ToK being her only real hit. If I´m wrong though, that would be cool, as I really like her music.

Today on Dutch television (it's on as we speak): High School Musical 2, starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

Number 1

The "Hope for Haiti Now"album debuts at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart this week, selling 171,000 copies in just two days of release.

Following the telethon Friday night, the 20-track live album was only available as a digital download for the tracking week, which ended Sunday night. (Physical copies of the album aren't yet produced or distributed.)

"Hope for Haiti Now" is the first album available solely as a digital download to debut at No. 1 in Billboard's 54-year history.

City of the day: Cape Town

3,5 Million people live in Cape Town, making it the second most populous city in South Africa. Here are my three highlights:

1) The Port Of Cape Town. Because of its position along one of the world's busiest trade routes it is one of the busiest ports in South Africa, handling the largest amount of fresh fruit and second only to Durban as a container port. The port also has significant repair and maintenance facilities that are used by several large fishing fleets and parts of the West African oil industry. Because of the many tourist attractions offered by Cape Town and its surrounding region, many cruise ships also berth in the port.

2) Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town, and is featured in the flag of Cape Town and other local government insignia. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.

3) Robben Island is an island in Table Bay, some seven kilometres off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. The name is Dutch for "seal island". It is of particular note as it was here that former South African President and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, alongside many other political prisoners, spent decades imprisoned during the apartheid era. Also, because of the presence of seals, there are many Great White Sharks swimming near the island, making it a very dangerous place to swim.

President Obama used his State of Union address to voice his support for allowing gays and lesbians to serve in the military.

Since taking office, Barack Obama has made it clear that he supports the agenda of gay rights activists who want to repeal the ridiculous 1993 law that strictly prohibits gays from serving in the military. During his State of the Union address Wednesday night, Obama said: "This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are."

City of the day: Berlin

It's the capital of Germany, a history book you can walk through, and home for 3,4 million people: Berlin. Here are my three highlights:

1) The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin and Germany. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which one formerly entered Berlin. In 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate. The Soviets hung large red banners across it to prevent him looking into the East. On November 9, 2009, Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, walked through Brandenburg Gate with Russia’s Mikhail Gorbachev and Poland's Lech Walesa as part of the 20-year celebration of tearing down the Berlin Wall.

2) The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic that completely enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin. The Wall included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses.

3) Potsdamer Platz is an important public square and traffic intersection in the centre of Berlin. It is named after the city of Potsdam, some 25 km to the south west, and marks the point where the old road from Potsdam passed through the city wall of Berlin at the Potsdam Gate. After developing within the space of little over a century from an intersection of rural thoroughfares into the most bustling traffic intersection in Europe, it was totally laid waste during World War II and then left desolate during the Cold War era when the Berlin Wall bisected its former location. Since German reunification, Potsdamer Platz has been the site of extensive redevelopment.

In fact, she says she has always gone alone, even if she was in a relationship.

Crowd pleaser

This evening, I've been watching my favourite Madonna tour ever, Re-Invention (it's not for nothing I've got a Re-Invent Yourself tattoo) filmed for the first time through the official camera's. First of all, I've got to say: I loved the show! I loved it just as much as I loved it in 2004 when I was standing front row at POP Bercy in Paris, and Gelredome Stadium Arnhem, and the next day in the stands at Gelredome Stadium. If there's one thing Madonna knows how to do, it's putting on a good show.

One of the features of the Re-Invention Tour, was the fact Madonna acted a little less distant from the audience than she usually is. I mean, we all know she will never be a Kylie Minogue, who is actually able to connect to her audience, but one might expect something from the official biggest female popstar ever, right? Normally, Madonna's not too good at getting along with her audience, and although during Re-Invention she's no natural, she's trying at least.

This would sound rather silly (me being a Kylie Minogue fan) but I've long given up on Madonna ever being a crowd pleaser. For some reason she will never be able to connect with her audience the way other performers do, probably because she's just not capable of showing affection to anyone. This show was a good enough try for me.

Back for good?

Here we go again... as it happens every few months ever since Take That started The Ultimate Tour back in 2007, The Sun has started another rumour Robbie Williams is getting back together with his former bandmates. Sure, both Take That and Robbie are on the Haiti charity single, but so are lots of other artists. I mean, is Kylie Minogue going to be joining Take That? Ha!

The Sun claims the guys have been in the studio together to record songs, but this is something The Sun claims every couple of weeks or so, and sounds highly doubtful, as both Take That and Robbie Williams are doing just fine without the other.

Zac Efron on fire

Zac Efron is working overtime to put more distance between him and his Disneyfied past, signing on to both star in and executive produce Fire, a thriller based on the same-named graphic novel.

E! News confirms that Efron will play an undergrad who is chosen for a special CIA project that tests whether ordinary citizens can—with singing and dancing proper training—be turned into forces to be reckoned with.

City of the day: Rio de Janeiro

It's a long way from Sydney, Australia, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! Yet, here we are in this huge city, where more than 11 million people live. A well deserved entry in my City Of The Day series, so here are my three highlights:

1) Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: O Cristo Redentor, formerly Portuguese: Christo redemptor) is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest art deco statue in the world. The statue stands 39.6 metres tall, including its 9.5 metre pedestal, and 30 metres wide. It weighs 635 tons and is located at the peak of the 700 metres Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. It is one of the tallest of its kind in the world. A symbol of Catholicism, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.

2) Starting out as a festival before the somber mood of Lent, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the greatest shows on Earth. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723. The carnival parade is filled with people and floats from various samba schools. A samba school can either be an actual school or just a collaboration of local neighbors that want to attend carnival.

3) Ipanema is a neighborhood located on the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Leblon and Arpoador. The beach at Ipanema became widely known by the song "The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema"), written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes.

Get up, Lisbon

Thanks to Michael, as of today I am the proud owner of Madonna's Get Up Lisbon: Re-Invention Tour live from Portugal DVD. Madonna never officially released this DVD, and fans have been hoping for over 5 years it would at one point or another see the light of day.

It leaked to the internet about a week ago, but since I've never downloaded a movie in my life, of course I didn't know how to get it, so Michael was kind enough to burn me a copy on a DVD and send it to me.

(and yes, I am against illegal downloading, but the fact Madonna doesn't release this DVD, means she or her record company is also not losing any profit from me having an illegal copy. If she had wanted to prevent this, she should have released it officially)

This morning I decided to buy myself a little gift, so I ordered Rihanna's most recent album Rated R from Play.com. As you may know, in May I'm going to her concert at Gelredome Stadium in Arnhem, so of course before that time I need to learn all the songs by heart.

I hope it gets delivered soon!

Tonight on Dutch television: Sweet Home Alabama, starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey. I've got it on DVD and can highly recommend it!

Deathly hallows 3D

As was known, the last Harry Potter novel, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows', would be split in two for the film version, so that the studio could milk it to the max and make a double profit out of it. However, today it has been revealed the new movies will be shot in 3D, joining many other movies in this new trend.

Well, actually not so new, as 3D has been a big feature in the 80s as well. 3D is pretty good for theme park movies that last just about 15 minutes, but when it comes to a full movie, the glasses really start to bug me.

Bye bye, Ugly Betty

Ratings have been declining for a while now, so the question wasn't really if, but how soon Ugly Betty would end anytime soon. Well, ABC confirmed today, it will end right after the current season.

“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion,” ABC and the show’s producers wrote in a statement. “We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

A new letter from Equality California, as the Proposition 8 trial is coming to its end:

iPad: something I won't be buying

Apple CEO Steve Jobs reveiled the new Apple gadget, called the iPad, today, at an electronics tradeshow in San Fransisco. The iPad will be released worldwide in two months, and is somewhat of an inbetweener of the smartphone and laptop. It won't have a real keyboard, although it can project a keypad on the touch screen, just like an iPhone.

The most expensive version will cost no less than $ 829, which is exactly $ 829 too much if you ask me. Funny how this news comes in right in the week I've decided never ever to buy anything from Apple again.

Live in Amsterdam

Katie Melua will perform a concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam on December 1, LiveNation announced today. Her new album, produced by William Orbit, will be released in May.

Tickets will go on sale this Saturday through LiveNation and Eventim.

City of the day: Sydney

Sydney may not be the capital of Australia, but it is the largest city of the continent. It's also the capital of the state of New South Wales and a popular tourist attraction. Here are my three highlights:

1) Bondi Beach is about one kilometre long and receives many visitors throughout the year. There is an underwater shark net shared, during the summer months, with other beaches along the southern part of the coast. Pods of whales and dolphins have been sighted in the bay during the months of migration. Fairy penguins, while uncommon, are sometimes also seen swimming close to shore. Bondi Beach is the end point of the City to Surf Fun Run which is held each year in August. The race attracts over 63,000 entrants who complete the 14 km run from the central business district of Sydney to Bondi Beach.

2) The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre on Bennelong Point in Sydney. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who, in 2003, received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour. The Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centres in the world.

3) Sydney Festival is Australia's largest and most attended annual cultural event running every January since it was first held in 1977. Its program features more than 50 events including classical and contemporary music, dance, circus, drama, visual arts and public lectures. Its indoor and outdoor presentations attract an estimated 1 million people annually.

These days, in every new picture of Madonna that surfaces, she looks more like something out of a freak show. As I've said before, she really should stop going to the plastic surgeon, as the results are really starting to get a bit horrific these days.

How I met J.Lo

This is cool: one of my favourite singers, Jennifer Lopez, will be a guest star on one of my favourite sitcoms, How I Met Your Mother!

J.Lo will play Anita Appleby, an author of self-help books who enlightens women on how to “train” men through denial, according to USA Today.

How I Met Your Mother was renewed for a sixth season this week and celebrated its 100th episode with a legendary musical number last month. Jennifer's episode will be aired in March in the United States, and hopefully soon after in Europe.

Your disco needs you - live in Rotterdam

Today, I'm going to post four video's from the KylieX2008 Tour at Ahoy Rotterdam. Obviously these video's are filmed from the crowd so the quality isn't that good, but it gives you an idea how great the show was. I was exactly front row center, which is basically the best spot in the venue.

Not productive, still fun

To say this has been a productive day at work would be an overstatement, but it has been a fun day for sure. First, I worked for about three hours, after which we went for a paid by the office lunch at my favourite lunch restaurant Kaap Hoorn. There were iceskaters on the lake on which the restaurant borders, so there was something nice to look at.

After lunch, which took about an hour and a half, we went back to the office where I worked for a couple more hours. At around 4.30 it was time for a goodbye drink with a co-worker who accepted a job closer to her home. Although I'm sad to see her go, I'm sure I will see her again sometime on a drink somewhere.

All in all, a great day at woprk, especially for a Wednesday, which is normally kind of a boring day.

Popcorn movie

Ziena and I went to see Did You Hear About The Morgans yesterday, the new romcom starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant, and I really liked it! I know it got some shiteous reviews in the press, and really, if you're out to see a serious movie, this is not the one for you, but if you're just looking for some fun, you've come to the right place.

I'm not going to spoil the story for those who would still like to see the movie, except that I can say that in true romcom style, of course they get back together in the end (as if you didn't know).

The acting is fun, the characters are likeable, and the storyline is easy to follow. It's a great popcorn movie, especially on such a cold night!

You know how a while ago I forced myself to admit I actually like sitcom The King Of Queens? Well, I've got another one for you: According To Jim.

I hate myself for liking Middle-America sitcoms, as they represent everything I despise, but this one actually makes me smile several times per episode.
