Governor Rick Perry has decided to suspend his GOP presidential bid and endorse former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, calling him a "conservative visionary."
In a news conference in South Carolina this morning, Perry announced his decision. "As I've contemplated the future of this campaign, I have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in the 2012 campaign," he stated. "Therefore today I am suspending my campaign and endorsing Newt Gingrich for president of the United States."

Perry has been trailing in all the recent South Carolina polls and finished well back in both the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. He had faced calls to drop out of the race in recent days as polls show him languishing while Gingrich gains steam.

Whispers throughout Hollywood say the Twilight saga will very likely continue after the Breaking Dawn movies have finished storming the box office. Now that the franchise has moved to Lionsgate, the president of the company says he would love to see it continue:

It's hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn't have ongoing value. It's an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is 'Boy I hope so.'

Elton John's husband, David Furnish, has issued an apology to Madonna. David posted an apology on his Facebook page to Madge. He writes:

Wow! What a tempest in a teapot. My comments regarding The Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion. My passion for our film "Gnomeo & Juliet" and belief in Elton's song really got my emotional juices going. But I must say for the record that I do believe Madonna is a great artist, and that Elton and I wish her all the best for next week's premiere of the film "W.E."

US President Barack Obama's visit today to Walt Disney World is as much an appeal to Brazilians and their dollars as it is Florida voters and their jobs. But it was a brief one, highlighted by a speech that lasted just 13 minutes.

As expected, Obama announced he intends to expand the U.S. State Department's Global Entry Program for trusted international visitors; expand and accelerate visa application processing for such countries as Brazil, India and China; and attempt to add more countries to the Visa Waiver Program that allows foreigners from 36 countries to skip the visa process.

The moves all are designed to make it easier for international travelers to visit the United States. In Florida and at Disney World, the issue focuses mostly on Brazilian travelers, whose visa applications are backlogged. Florida and Disney World are among the favorite destinations of free-spending Brazilians, who spend an average of $5,000 each per visit.

"We've got the best product to sell. I mean look at where we are," Obama declared, gesturing to Cinderella's Castle behind him.

"People want to come here," he said. "So this is what it's all about – telling the world that America is open for business," he added.

Obama assured the crowd that the United States would continue to "protect our borders" even as it fosters a more welcoming environment for tourists.

Obama began his brief speech at about 12:40, starting with a recognition of Mickey Mouse. "It's always nice to meet someone who has bigger ears than me," he said.

“IT’S REDUCTIVE.”
Those two words, uttered by Madonna, in response to ABC-TV’s Cynthia McFadden’s question about a Lady Gaga song, has “gone viral,” as they say. Even better, when McFadden, who certainly knows what the word means, asked Madonna to define it, M coyly said, “Look it up!”

Apparently, a lot of people have. Now, I keep hearing the word, generally accompanied with a laugh and a reference to the pop icon. Madonna has taught us much over the years, now she’s revived a word rarely used. (Well, I’ve always said if Madonna hadn’t gone into music, she would have stayed in Michigan and become Miss Ciccone, the stern English teacher.)

It was this benign answer about Gaga that became part of the Elton John/ David Furnish’s attack on Madonna, after she won a Golden Globe for best original song on Sunday night. The song is titled “Masterpiece” from her coming film, “W.E.” (Elton’s effort was “Hello, Hello” from the flop animated movie “Gnomeo and Juliet.”) Aside from ripping Madonna’s song, the pair declared - on Twitter and Facebook - that Madonna’s “attack” on Gaga “shows how desperate she is.”

Goodness, I didn’t get that at all. Madonna has no inclination to trash Gaga. But she is certainly within her rights to imply, gently, that Lady G. has appropriated some aspects of her image, sound and message. Music critics were the first, in fact, to point out the similarities between Gaga’s “Born This Way” and M’s “Express Yourself.”

Elton John, who has been a star since 1970, feels he has earned the right to be perennially cranky and opinionated. Fine. And he does wonderful charity work. But I think Madonna, who has been a star since 1983, has earned the right to answer a question honestly, from her point of view. Or to accept an award, if she wins one. Elton has had a bee in his bonnet about Madonna for years. At various times he has criticized her singing, dancing, her right to be a star, even. She has rarely responded.

In this case, however, it is Elton who appears to be “desperate.” Back in the day, Madonna could be ungracious and careless in her remarks, but I never recall her attacking another performer in this manner, or publicly declaring she should have won an award instead of somebody else. (Perhaps she learned her lesson when, in the midst of a wave of positive reviews and publicity for “Evita” - and a Golden Globe win - she said she thought she deserved to be nominated for an Oscar, too. The Academy was not amused.)

The truth is, most of the public has never heard either Elton or Madonna’s song. Why carry on so?
Oh, “reductive?” It means something is the same, only less.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are "all but officially finished", it was claimed last night. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 48, has two kids with the 39-year-old French singer but the pair have never married.

They are said to be living apart and haven't gone to a premiere together for more than a year.
U.S. celebrity magazine People has claimed that the couple — who have been together for 14 years — are living largely separate lives.

"According to multiple sources they are all but officially finished," the magazine said.

A tour guide has been mauled by a shark while snorkelling at Coral Bay, about 150 kilometres south of Exmouth in WA. It is believed a three-metre tiger shark attacked the 26-year-old man on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the man's injuries are not life-threatening but it is believed he has sustained severe lacerations to his right forearm. The man was flown to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment and is in a stable condition. The Fisheries Department says the beach is closed following the attack. Graham Murphy has run underwater tours in Coral Bay for more than a decade and says the attack is an isolated incident.

"I think it's a big shock to everyone in the area, I mean I've been in Coral Bay for some 14 years, snorkelling regularly each day and never had an issue with sharks of any type. I think it was a complete fluke, a one off. You see sharks regularly when you are snorkelling in the north-west. It's not something I am concerned about when I am out there snorkelling and I dont think any of the tour guides, it doesn't cross their mind because we see sharks so regularly in the water and it's not something we are concerned about."

The attack comes a day after a shark attack south of Newcastle at Redhead Beach left surfer Glen Folkard with serious injuries to his upper leg and torso. Newcastle's beaches have reopened after the attack by what is believed to be a bull shark.

On January 15, Celine Dion participated in the “Play Without Pain Children’s Sickle Cell Benefit” organized by Caesars Entertainment, AEG Live and Children’s Hospital Boston. The benefit, which aimed to raise awareness and funds for research on treatments for sickle cell anemia, raised more than 1 million dollars. Hate groups

A group of black pastors is protesting at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama because they object to the Center's rightful designation of certain Christian organizations as hate groups. The protest is led by Peter LaBarbera of hate group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, whose organization is one of several that have been designated a hate group by the SPLC. One of the demonstrators is Dr. Patrick Wooden, senior pastor of Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"And we're here as African-Americans, as black preachers," he says. "I have ministers with me from Delaware, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina. We don't want this group of people to now say to African-Americans Well, it's like being black -- and we stand idly by and African-Americans not hear from the ministers who have a different point of view," says the pastor.

Wooden believes the SPLC's labeling of groups like his own that oppose gay rights as hate groups is seriously damaging the SPLC's credibility. I'm sure he does, but that doesn't make him any less of a hater.

Julie Frost may not be a household name, but she's one of the songwriters behind Madonna's Golden Globe best original song win. Frost, a singer-songwriter who resides in Southern California, stood beside the Queen of Pop as she accepted the award for "Masterpiece." The award-winning song plays during the ends credits of Madonna's directional debut, "W.E.," and will also appear on the pop star's upcoming studio album.

"Being acknowledged by the Hollywood Foreign Press amongst a room full of so many people I admire and accepting the award next to Madonna, was such an honor," Frost, who has co-written songs for Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull, told CBSNews.com.

Frost added, "As Adam Levine and Jimmy Fallon announced the award for best original song, I thought, no matter what happens I'm proud of our song and to be included in the same category as so many of my musical heroes."

"Masterpiece," which was written by Madonna, Frost and songwriter-producer Jimmy Harry, beat out the four other nominees, including Elton John's "Hello Hello" from "Gnomeo & Juliet" and Mary J. Blige's "The Living Proof" from "The Help."

It was Frost's first Golden Globes Awards, and from the sound of it, she had a great time.

"After getting dressed and pampered by stylists and hair and make-up artists, I walked to the limo that was waiting for me, dressed in my gorgeous dress and stunning jewelry and accessories," Frost said. "The magnitude of the evening set in as I waved back at my good friends who were there to see me off."

Bruno Mars has avoided a conviction for possessing cocaine after completing more than 200 hours of community service. Bruno was arrested in September 2010 after he was found with 2.6 grams of the substance in the toilets of Las Vegas's Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. He pleaded guilty in January 2011, saying that "he did a very foolish thing and has never used drugs before".
He was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service — but exceeded his quota by more than 30 hours. At the time the judge also ruled that Bruno should pay a fine of £1,300 and attend drug education classes. He could have faced up to four years in jail if convicted.

His lawyer Blair Berk said: "Bruno is very appreciative he is being given this opportunity as a first offender not to suffer any conviction and instead to have his charge dismissed. He is taking all of this quite seriously."

A 25-year-old man was killed by a shark at Port St Johns Second beach on Sunday, the Eastern Cape health department said. “This afternoon a swimmer from Port St Johns was attacked by a shark and struggled with it for about five minutes using his surf board,” said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

“A surfer who was next to him during the ordeal described the swimmer as being brave by fighting it. Unfortunately it injured him severely in both arms and in the chest,” he said.

A second eyewitness raised the alarm for other swimmers to leave the water.

“A doctor who was amongst the swimmers tried to save his life along with paramedics who arrived at the beach. The man died on the way to a local health centre.”

“Second beach is notorious for shark attacks and I am told that there is no shark net there,” said Kupelo.

Beyonce's parents. Mathew and Tina Knowles, are officially divorced today. The pair filed last month in Texas, or more accurately refiled, since their last attempt to go through with the divorce in 2009 failed when they didn't show up for their court date.

Tina said their marriage was "insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities" … which "prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation" in the paperwork.

Following a recent town hall in Iowa, 14-year-old bisexual teenager Rebecka Green approached Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry and asked him the following question:

"I just want to know why you’re so opposed to gays serving openly in the military, why you want to deny them that freedom when they’re fighting and dying for your right to run for president."

Here's what Rick had to say in response:

"Here’s my issue. This is about my faith, and I happen to think, you know, there are a whole hosts of sins. Homosexuality being one of them, and I’m a sinner and so I’m not going to be the first one to throw a stone. I don’t agree that openly gays should be serving in the military. 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell' was working and my position is just like I told a guy yesterday, he said, 'How would you feel if one of your children was gay?' I said I’d feel the same way. Avril Lavigne's fifth album is rumoured to be released in 2012, "far earlier than imagined". However, nothing has been confirmed by Lavigne or her record label as to when the album will be released. In September 2011 Avril stated that she had a "few" tracks ready for the record, before stating a month later in an interview with Virgin Radio 96 that she would begin production on it by January 2012, despite saying on her Twitter account that she began recording new material in November 2011.

In a recent interview, Avril confirmed that she has moved to Epic Records to release her album. The new album will musically be the opposite of Goodbye Lullaby. Avril explained, "Goodbye Lullaby was more mellow, but the next one will be pop and more fun again. I already have a song that I know is going to be a single, I just need to re-record it!"

Avril has already revealed the title of two of the songs from her fifth album as "Fine" and "Gone". The tracks were originally recorded for Goodbye Lullaby but never made the final cut. It has also been confirmed that Avril is working with music production duo The Runners on the upcoming album.

Action adventure film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" led a trio of sequels at the box office over another underwhelming weekend that saw ticket sales fall from last year. Robert Downey Jr.'s follow-up to the 2009 hit "Sherlock Holmes" pulled in an estimated $54.7 million around the world, distributor Warner Bros. said on Sunday. That included $40 million from the United States and Canada, where the movie topped the domestic charts, plus $14.7 million from six international markets.

Overall, the US box office repeated a sluggish trend of recent weeks and dashed hopes for a major kickstart before a crush of big-budget Christmas films hits theaters. Sales for all movies from Friday through Sunday will reach about $119 million domestically, according to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office. That is 11.6 percent below the same weekend last year and follows the worst box office weekend in three years.

"The momentum we have lost over the past few weeks has taken its toll on the bottom line," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com Box Office. "Thankfully there are some big titles on the way."

The Jonas Brothers singer checked into the emergency room at Children's Hospital Los Angeles with severe cramps in his abdomen, according to TMZ.com. Kojak star Dan Frazer has died at the age of 90. The actor passed away on Friday (16Dec11) after suffering a cardiac arrest in New York.
He started his career in the 1950s and made his big screen debut with Sir Sidney Poitier in 1963 movie Lilies of the Field.

Frazer's other film roles include Cleopatra Jones, Take the Money and Run, and Deconstructing Harry, but he is best known for playing Captain Frank McNeil in hit 1970s cop show Kojak opposite Telly Savalas.

Frazer also appeared as a judge in the Law & Order franchise, starring in the original show and spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and he was last seen onscreen in 2010 movie The Pack, with Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss.

It was announced earlier Rihanna was filming her LOUD Tour for an official DVD release, but now it has also been confirmed which show, or should I say shows, are being filmed. The final three shows at the O2 Arena in London will be put together to form one show on DVD.

It's quite usual for artists to film two shows instead of one, so that they can fix technical problems that went wrong in one show with footage of the second one, but to film three of them is rather silly. I suppose Rihanna knows as well as her fans her shows suck, so she really needs to puzzle to make it look good on home cinema.

Madonna and LiveNation Entertainment confirm a three album licensing deal with Interscope Records. Madonna will have a new album out in late March; it was officially confirmed this week by Interscope Records. In one component of a very broad plan developed by long time manager Guy Oseary and LiveNation Entertainment, the Material Girl has signed a three album deal with Interscope Records.

The new album, her first in five years, has been completed. "Gimme All Your Luvin," the first single from the album, will be released the last week in January prior to her upcoming Bridgestone Halftime Superbowl appearance on February 5th.

In 2007, Madonna signed a multi-faceted deal with LiveNation that includes new studio albums, touring, merchandising, fan club/website, DVDs, music-related television and film projects and associated sponsorship agreements. "We look forward to a great partnership," commented Live Nation Entertainment's Chairman of Global Music & CEO, Global Touring Arthur Fogel.

Nigeria’s Catholic bishops are praising the country’s Senate for its “courageous and hope-inducing decision” to pass a bill outlawing same-sex unions and public displays of homosexuality last month.

The bill, passed Nov. 29th, came amidst threats by foreign leaders, especially U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, of aid cuts if African countries fail to enshrine human rights for gays and lesbians.

On December 7th, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria issued a statement saying the vote to outlaw same-sex unions and “all such public manifestations” came as a “great relief” to most Nigerians.

“We wish to strongly support the prohibition of same-sex union as an expression both of our cultural values as Nigerians and our religious belief as Christians,” they wrote.

What they fail to mention is that gays and lesbians can actually get thrown into prison for as many as 14 years, just for being gay. And those bishops call themselves Christians? Horrible!

A surfer has had a lucky escape after a shark took a bite out of his board while he was in the sea off the coast of Australia.

Stephen King was taking an early morning surf near the village of Angourie in New South Wales when the shark swam up and lunged at him. He quickly pulled his legs out of the water, saving them from major injury, and escaped with only minor puncture wounds. His board fared less well, ending up with a large chunk out of one side and in two pieces.

He has agreed to allow his board to be displayed in a local museum.

The leadership of North Korea appeared to pass to a third generation of the Kim family Monday after the weekend death of Kim Jong Il, who ruled the reclusive Stalinist state since 1994. The man known as the "dear leader" died of a heart attack Saturday at age 69, state news outlets announced Monday. The ruling Worker's Party declared the youngest of his three sons, Kim Jong Un, the "great successor" to his father's mantle.

Kim Jong Il had led North Korea since 1994, when his father -- the nation's founder, Kim Il Sung -- died at age 82. During his 17 years in power, the country suffered a devastating famine even as it built up its million-strong army, expanded its arsenal of ballistic missiles and became the world's eighth declared nuclear power.

The news of his death spurred South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North more than five decades after their 1950-53 conflict, to put its military on high alert. But across one of the world's most heavily fortified borders, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak told his citizens "to go about their lives" in the meantime.

"For the sake of the future of the Republic of Korea, peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is more important than anything else. It should not be threatened by what has happened," he said.

In a speech designed to convince the world that gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said religious objections to homosexuality should not stand in the way of vigorous United Nations action to promote the gay rights agenda.

On Tuesday, Clinton said promoting the global acceptance of “gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people” is “one of the remaining human rights challenges of our time,” likening the effort to ending racial, sexual, or religious discrimination. She noted that perhaps the “most challenging issue arises when people cite religious or cultural values as a reason to violate or not to protect the human rights of LGBT citizens.” These objections, she said, are “not unlike the justification offered for violent practices towards women like honor killings, widow burning, or female genital mutilation.” She stated worldwide “opinions are still evolving” on homosexuality as they did with slavery, and “what was once justified as sanctioned by God is now properly reviled as an unconscionable violation of human rights. In each of these cases, we came to learn that no [religious] practice or tradition trumps the human rights that belong to all of us,” she said.

She insisted the UN must oppose all forms of human rights violations against homosexuals and “transgender” people, from execution and banishment to criminalizing LGBT “status or behavior,” denying them free access to “public spaces,” or the “bullying and exclusion” that takes place in the United States. “I speak about this subject knowing that my own country’s record on human rights for gay people is far from perfect,” Clinton said.

Clinton said that that notions that “gay people are pedophiles, that homosexuality is a disease that can be caught or cured, or that gays recruit others to become gay” are “simply not true.” The secretary of state added that nations must pass LGBT civil rights laws, even when they offend the majority of a nation’s citizens. “Leadership, by definition, means being out in front of your people when it is called for,” Clinton said. “[W]e are each free to believe whatever we choose…But progress comes from changes in laws.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the U.K. has banned the Final Destination 5 poster because they claim it is upsetting children.

According to the ASA, the poster image "was likely to catch the attention of children, especially because it was shown on a poster on the Underground, where it was an untargeted medium." The ASA also said that the image "was likely to cause fear and undue distress to children."

Warner Bros tried to argue that the shattered skull was a "fantasy image" and that the poster "accurately reflected the content of the film in an appropriate manner without causing excessive fear or distress," but in the end they lost the battle.

Reports out of Mumbai this week are suggesting that Paramount Pictures paid a mere $600 to boost Tom Cruise's ego. It seems not enough people were planning to show on Saturday in the city, where Tom was slated to promote his latest movie, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, so the studio shelled out money to get some really enthusiastic fans. One of the people who claim to have been paid, said:

"Tom kaun? [Tom who?] I don’t know who he is or what he does. We were told to come here by 1pm today and wait for a foreign VIP to come out of the airport gate and scream and shout when he came. None of us know who Tom is. There was a buffet lunch also for us and we were paid Rs 150 for this job today. We do this for television shows and other such events where crowds are required."

Paramount Pictures denies the claim, and have released the following statement:

In 2008, South Park featured Samwell's What What in one of their episodes in which the character Butters is featured as a parody of the music video. The owners of lewd original, Brownmark, then
sued South Park for infringing on their copyright but South Park and its owner, Viacom, were not worried. Their defense rested in the fair use policy and it was sound.

Even though Brownmark was told that South Park's use of the video was fair, the small company did so anyway.

A Wisconsin judge immediately dismissed the case, punishing Brownmark with Viacom's attourney fees. The judge went on to say South Park use of the video was "to lampoon the recent craze in our society of watching video clips on the internet that are — to be kind — of rather low artistic sophistication and quality."

Piranha attack

Authorities in Bolivia have reported that a young man who leapt into a river infested with piranhas was killed. Apparently, the 18-year-old man jumped out of his canoe. The man bled to death after the attack, which happened last week.

The police believe it was a suicide because the man was a fisherman in that area and knew the river well.

City of hope

Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with lifestyle brand Neff to create beanies for City of Hope. Scarlett says:

"I helped create this Neff Beanie with the hope that every purchase might make a cancer patient feel a bit more comfortable during his/her treatments and look cool and be cozy all the while. The beanies are eco friendly too, so they're as nice to the earth as they are to the person wearing them.”

Profits from the eco-friendly, limited edition beanies will go to benefit City of Hope, a leading cancer research, treatment and education center, to help support the fight against cancer.For every purchase, Neff will donate one beanie to a City of Hope patient or survivor. After 5,000 beanies have been donated, they will donate 10% of each sale giving up to $20,000.
